First Snow of the winter

Yesterday (12/13/2007), we got hit with the snow that has come over from the midwest. It started at 12:30 and did not stop until late last night-total of 10 inches total. I started shoveling a few times (by my office) twice. By the time I left to go home, it was as if I had not shoveled the snow due to the wind and drifts.

While I was shoveling the first time around, a big Coke Cola truck was stuck. My work offices is on a busy main street. Let's just say many frustrated drivers were not happy. My sister already saw abandoned cars as early as 1:30pm when she was walking around the neighborhood during the early part of the snowstorm.

Since I live close to work, I cannot use the excuse I need to need to go home early to get home safely. Despite the snow and almost falling down (thanks to the icy base a few times), I got home in 15 minutes. I walked slowly and saw many cars bumper to bumper in traffic or stuck in the snow. The snow this time really wreaked havoc. The schools were smart to end school before the snow storm!

Luckily the snow was soft and powdery. The first snow of this year was wet and slushy (this type is heavier to shovel) and I get colder faster. This morning I finished off reshoveling and sweeping the steps. I just checked outside and the snow and ice had melted away already. One thing we do not need is a ice on the sidewalks and steps.

When I was a kid I loved snow. Now I think of it as more of a nuisance than anything else. What happened to the innocence of loving the school snow days, snow ball fights, sledding, making snow angels or making snow men gone? Time and age have paved way to safety from getting to point A to point B is more important.

My friend's husband is visiting from South Korea. I hope he had a safe flight. I hope he has time so I can take him around Boston. The snowstorm has greeted him on his first business trip to the USA. But since he is here for work, he might not have a lot of time to spend outside his work obligations.

One of my acquaintances took 2 hours to take the commuter rail from South Station to Wellesley. Another friend took 5 hours to get from Dorchester to Somerville! Plus last night my sister said that many bus routes are limited to big roads (no hills and small streets) and even the "E" train line did not go past Brigham Circle due to the crazy traffic last night.
