33 Restaurant Dinner

"33" dinner
Recently I had dinner with my good friend and mentor/big sister DW. We met up at "33" as she is staying at her sister's while her home is being renovated. I figured a place by BACK BAY "T" station and Commuter Rail is right there. I had to do a key drop off before meeting up with DW which in terms of timing worked out wonderfully!

I never had dinner at "33" and the last time I was there was with Miss Felicia whom I miss terribly. We always did brunch, restaurant and lounge/bar hopping. She was my cohort in crime to talk about a myraid of things. She is very smart, Tufts grad, with a killer sense of style and great friend whom I miss terribly. (Luckily I got to see her twice last year!).

Back to dinner at "33" we went on a Thursday night (very chilly) the bar area was hopping with a networking event. We took a table by the wall. The service was attentive. I enjoyed our amuse bouche of a sliver of a chicken lumpia. My friend DW loved it. I enjoyed it but was not wowed though. We decided to have the $33 prefixe menu. (Why not?)

First Course
Dipped Fried Crab Croquette - with vine tomato soup

My friend and I enjoyed the croquette and the soup hit the spot as it was a cold evening.

Second Course
Cajun Spiced Talapia - with smoked corn relish and shrimp gumbo
Or Grilled Chicken Breast - with chicken sausage jambalaya

The Talapia was great topped with two big pieces of jumbo shrimp. Not over cooked and they did a great job. As for the chicken, I enjoyed it but the sausage was what I really liked.

Third Course
Peach Cobbler - with vanilla ice cream

This dish took forever to come out. When we got it we both preferred the ice cream over the dessert itself.. I rarely never not finish my dessert but this time I did not finish it. The peach cobbler was too sweet but the crust was nice. I did finish that one.

Alumna interviews for college to High School students

One of my close friends on the local college club handles admissions /recruitment and recently I conducted two alumna interviews. I usually just do other things acting as information,, going to a session to talk about my alma mater or what not. This time I had the pleasure of meeting a local Brockton HS student and conduct a phone interview with a Milton Academy student. Both were stellar in their own unique ways. NBJ was wonderful and held her own. She does not have a situation with alot of mentors but her desire to succeed, achieve and do something with her life was amazing. Her love of my alma mater and interests will stand her in great stead. I think she will go far her enthuasiasm having been in UPWARD BOUND. This program I did mistake with another program OUTWARD BOUND. UPWARD BOUND is a college prep program limited to 5 local high schools (she got in under special recommedation) throughout the whole school year and summers during your time in high school. I admire her perserverance to challenge herself (mock trial to improve her speaking ability) and willingness to learn.

The other young lady I talked to AK lives close to where I live and comes from a completely different situation 360 from NBJ. She is from a college educated Jewish family that honors education. She handled her personal struggles very well and candidly shared with me. ( I applaud her). She is great with creative writing and is lucky to have done it at Simon Rock and plans to go to Oxford this summer to do more advanced creative writing courses. She won the high school short story contest with her piece on the Mexican and Americans dealing with border patrol.

Both are commemdable young women. I applaud those who have to do the college admissions, not something that is easy I must say. I recall a great friend of mine LD who would tell me how he would spend a ton of time reading applications. I would be reading essays for a scholarship. In the beginning I would be very generous and I got harder as the essays I read (wore on). I would go back sometimes to regrade them though.

It was fun to be active and helpful in the process. I wish both young women well.

Valentines Day 2007

Today is a day that Hallmark, florists and chocolate stores love! Oh restaurants have prefixe menus for "lovers" and reservations for last minute people are next to impossible to have.

*Think in Japan and Korea Christmas or men get the flowers and chocolate there today. But the women get flowers and chocolates on White Day in March (instituted by the businesses as it is only fair women get their chocolates and flowers too).

Seriously though, today's weather has been the worst all winter (I have personally experienced thus far this year). Though right now it is 30 F it feels like 23F with the wind and windchill. This morning and last night we got a few inches of snow. I ended up sweeping (yes sweeping not shoveling) the steps to my work place. Luckily I did this morning as by noon as the snow changed from hail to then rain. So wet snow compacted on the steps had to be shoveled off.

Luckily at work, our contractor who is painting the office I occupy since this past Monday, had an extra shovel. Not fun I must say.

I must admit thanks MKD (scifiku) thanks for the awesome fruit, nuts and cracker basket. It was nice to get at work yesterday. As the FEDEX person said, early Vday present. Awwww, I definitely loved the healthy snacks aspect. I envy that she is in LA.

One email from a Texan put a smile on my face now just be safe while traveling this week ok?

It is true, it is the little things in life to be thankful and appreciate.

May all you and your loved ones have a great day.

Love Story in Harvard (SBS 2004)

So I recently finished "LOVE STORY IN HARVARD"러브스토리 인 하버드 sbs 2004 a Korean drama that was popular that year with Kim Tae Hee (Lee Soo In) and Kim Rae Won (Kim Hyun Woo).

I loved Kim Tae Hee in this role as the lead where she finally doesn't have to glare her eyes (to show her frustration, anger, discontent) as she did in "Stairway to Heaven" as a supporting role to Choi Ji Woo. She shines as Soo In. Soo In is a poor but bright Harvard Medical Student who works many jobs who one day meets Hyun Woo (Kim Rae Won) at a hotel and barges in by accident (thinking it is someone else). Rae Won also does a great acting job (I love how he is able to emote so well and still enjoy his acting) though he continually has a knack to get roles that require alot of running from him (this one included). He is a Harvard Law School student from a privileged family background from South Korea and he feels it is his duty to represent South Korea well. At school he meets his rival both in school and love Alex Hong or korean name Hong Jung Min. (I don't get why Alex falls in love with Soo In still after she sets him straight after one date.)

The drama chronicles how their lives intertwine through the years. I must say that the English was butchered by Rae Won and the actor who played Alex Hong (Lee Jung Jin). Of course, the drama has elements of happiness (Soo In and Hyun Woo's first kiss) to dispair (when Soo In finds out the reality of Da Chemicals and Hamilton Foundation). I admit I liked Tae Hee's character Soo In more in the beginning than the latter half of the drama. What happened to her? The character development was not good. Rae Won shined and his acting with his eyes and tearing up (wow amazing!). He got me when I first saw him in "Roof Top Cat" then I had to see "Love Patzzi" and I did manage to see his very revealing coming of age first film.

As in many Korean dramas, there are decisions made by characters that do not make sense. But because I liked the two leads I overlooked that point.

Jung Da Bin passed away Feb 10, 2007

정다빈 / Jung Da-bin (Jeong Da-bin);

1980-Mar-04 to 2007-Feb-10

My good friend YuJin just told me yesterday that one of my fave Kdrama actresses passed away. I first caught her in "ROOFTOP CAT" with Kim Rae Won on Channel AZN two years ago. When they reshowed it last year in the spring I watched it again.

It is said she had depression and posted some messages on her personal blog/website her thoughts before her untimely death. Her boyfriend found her on FEB 10 dead. Some sources say she was depressed over lack of work since in a drama Sept 2005 and her former manager being imprisoned for not handing over money owed her. She was close to her 27th bday and this month 2 years ago Lee Eun Soo passed away (she was in "Firebird" and other Korean flicks). Just last month, Yumi (whom I do not know well) also committed suicide.

I was feeling shocked. I do think that mental health is so important. Having a strong network of friends and a good sense of self and awareness goes a long way. I know Da Bin had always a reputation for being sunny and happy. I loved her also in "My Sister in-law is 19 (2004)" and I even watched "Typhoon Summer" for her starpower (the drama was passable). I loved "He was Cool (2003)" when she partnered with Son Seung Hun.

Her funeral held recently this week had many famous faces there including a few of her co-stars of many dramas and films she was in.

Death-Jung Da Bin passed away
The actress Jeong Da-bin was found dead at a villa in Seoul’s affluent Gangnam district on Saturday. Jeong was found hanged with a towel in the bathroom at the home of a person only identified as Lee.

Lee, Jeong’s boyfriend and the first to call the police, testified that Jeong came to his house very drunk in the early hours of Saturday morning and that he found her dead when he woke up around 7:50 a.m. According to police, Jeong had been drinking with two friends at a bar in Cheongdam-dong and called Lee to come and pick her up since she was too drunk to go home. Lee joined Jeong for a drink and they arrived at his house in Samseong-dong at around 3:20 a.m.

Lee told police that Jeong had recently been depressed over her lack of work and the imprisonment of her previous manager. Police estimated Jeong died between 7:30 to 7:50 a.m., and though no note was found, police assume it was suicide since there were no immediate signs of foul play.

Jeong, whose real name was Jeong Hae-sun, posted a note on her personal blog around 5:04 a.m. on Friday expressing a complicated state of mind. “I am complicated, and I feel like I am going to die. I am angry without reason, and I might go mad…I feel like I have lost myself and my identity…The Lord came to me…I was about to collapse, and he quietly lifts me up.”

The exact cause of death will be revealed by the postmortem. A woman identified as Jang, who had been drinking with Jeong, said the actress was carefully choosing her next work and was eager to perform. “I can’t believe that she killed herself. Jeong invited us to her house the day before yesterday, and she showed great determination about her acting career,” police quoted Jang as saying. Jeong’s family opposed an autopsy at first but changed their minds after a gathering Sunday to discover whether it was really suicide.

Jeong’s new management agency claims there were some suggestions of foul play. It said a scar on Jeong’s wrist was not from a suicide attempt in October 2006, as Lee had suggested, but a scar she received in her first year in high school. It also said the actress showed strong determination to work when she talked about her future plans with close friends she contacted right before her death. The agency says the last posting on her website cannot be read as a suicide note.

A member of Jeong’s family said, “We can’t figure out why she wanted to commit suicide, and we decided to request the postmortem because we want to know for sure what happened.”

Life this past week (til Feb 10)

This week was very hectic. I had alot to do. At my work, we had a new marketing intern Yi Chiu from TW and she is cool. She is doing a MASTERS here in Boston and hails from Taipei. She is awesome as she let me borrow ===Concerto Love (aka Nodame Cantabile ---original Japanese title) but with Chinese Subs! She told me she went to Justin's concert last Tuesday night and Pink was the opening act. I read on TV Guide that Justin's second SNL appearance is repeating on SNL Saturday, FEB 17! I hate the half hour cut off version by E!. So I guess I should check this episode out.

Last weekend I met up with RS (friday) who is a transplant from Chicago. Her first name is named after the hot dog vendor who was her dad's fave when he was getting his graduate degree at U CHI. But her brother gets a regular name. We went to Z Square Lounge and it is in the heart of Harvard Square. We noshed on two appetizers to share and then had dessert. We got the crab cake (one big one) for $12 and a chicken salad. To save room for dessert, I got the chocolate bread pudding (a decent serving) and she got the chocolate brownie. We walked into some rain from Harvard to Porter.

crabcake appetizer

Chicken salad

chocolate brownie & choc bread pudding

Then I met up with TK and went to her and her bro's home to hang out and catchup.

Saturday, it started out cold (both days were cold) and I went to usher at the museum (now back to ushering). I caught ten minutes of the sci-fi "Lost in Space" Russian film and just had to wander the MFA. I caught the Fashion Photography side exhibit and went to visit the main Fashion Show exhibit and really watched the DIOR show. I really enjoyed it. Then I grabbed the T (I decided to get the Link Pass for the month a whopping $59 but you get both T and bus so I guess not as bad better than combo price before) and met up with Jae Hee at Harvard Square. We went to Bartleys Burger and I got the George Bush (not for the name but two patties, with bbq, cheese and sweet potatoe fries and we got a cobb salad. (Boy alot of food to share and then some!). I used the last of my cash.

cobb salad and george bush burger

inside the Burger place

Then we caught (perfect timing at 3pm) at Harvard Square theater "Dream Girls". Now I know what all the fuss is about Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson. Boy Eddie Murphy just sparkled in his role as Johnny Early. He killed it. Jae Hee enjoyed it even though her English is not so great. It helped there were a ton of musical numbers. Since we got out at 5pm, I decided we should hit BURDICKS which makes european style hot chocolate and hand makes their chocolates with no molds (so last no longer than a few days in terms of freshness). I recommended the smallest size (demi $2) for her and myself. Then we ordered two pieces of cake (decadent---bday cake and an Austrian cake). Both sweet one with chocolate cake with raspberry filling and the other with cream and vanilla cake with the total being $11. (We were able to find a table). Then I decided to show her Porter Square. Very tiny but something to show here where the local Japanese go to eat and get videos and munchies. I did get some stuff for my folks at City Sports. I always worry about their safety. So I got some stuff so when they walk around in the snow and ice, they won't fall down so easily. I worry about them. They are relatively young but their health is not always so great.

Yummy cake display at Burdicks.

(aren't the chocolate penguins and mice cute? They are all handmade with no molds per the sign I read at Burdicks).

I caught an interesting period movie that I will talk about in another entry. Afterwards I do stay up to make some baked goods, my new fave things to make are mini green tea muffins!

Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea....
So recently I helped plan with the club president our annual afternoon tea event. In the past we would invite prospective students to attend and it would be held at the Ritz. But times have changed and budgets so we limited to alumnae at the most recent one.

We held it at "UPSTAIRS IN THE SQUARE" (91 Winthrop Street, Cambridge, MA) and it was a lovely event. I had much fun and the food choices were excellent. One of the owners graciously stopped by after I asked if she could. It is women owned and just celebrated an anniversary about 20 odd years in the business (I cannot recall the actual number). Everyone in attendance about 25 women enjoyed themselves. Alumnae from all different classes came and had great tea, conversation, or just caught up with good friends. I met some amazing women at my table.

First Floor Zebra Room
The Zebra Room, named for its wild animal carpet, has glowing, high gloss deep cerise walls and is lit with distinguished sconces as well as two large and cheerful skylights that make it equally appealing as a sun-filled daytime room, or for star-gazing at night. It is also a flexible space, since it can be divided with a large decoratively hand-painted set of screens to accommodate smaller parties. The Zebra Room was where we held our afternoon tea.

On alumnae has her own interior design firm, another is in the finance industry and constantly travelling to London for work and another I know is a fundraiser for a local museum in Boston.

I had a great time and blast. Until next year....

MARS on AZN (TW 2004) voted Best Drama

I started watching this Taiwanese drama 战神MARS; pinyin: Zhànshén MARS) at my mom's urging on Jan 1 (no less this year). Plus it started when I had a sprained ankle but unfortunately for me it is only on M and T 7-8pm EST or repeats 10:30-11:30pm on AZN. It gives me good practice listening to Mandarin and I appreciate the English and traditional Chinese character subs.

Gosh the amount of mangas turned into dramas. I found out from Yi Chiu that this manga written by Fuyumi Suryo was out when she was in high school and now seeing it in live action is interesting. In real life I am told that Vic Chou and Barbie Hsu (the leads) are seriously dating. Plus the duet song is sung by them as well for the closing theme "Let Me Love You" (rang wo ai ni). I do like the music and there is an interesting array of emotions and dark themes not typically found in a Korean drama which made this drama a breathe of fresh air for me.

Mars, the God of War -
After the incredible "Meteor Garden" (a must-watch for its beautiful stylistic direction, outrageous sense of humor, and pretty decent ensemble acting), the other Taiwanese shows that I watched generally proved disappointing, until MARS came along!
MARS is phenomenal. This show scores on the excellent storyline, fantastic soundtrack, and the gentle and sensitive directing style. The quality of the script astounded me; upon reflection, it shouldn't be surprising, actually, since this was adapted from one of the top-selling manga series (of the same name) in Japan.

This is not just any fluffy teenage romance series. It is sweet and riveting simply because the script handles certain darker themes - such as suicide, loss, and one's internal demons - sensitively and intelligently. It is about two different individuals who have to learn to face their past, and to trust in each other. Although the overall tone of the series is an optimistic one, it is also a realistic one, which makes the series all the more believable.

Plot (*spoilers ahead!*):

With his tousled shoulder-length hair and trademark red jacket, Chen Ling (Zai Zai) is the quintessential laughing, careless, reckless young rebel who is adored by the female population in his university. In contrast, Qiluo (Barbie Hsu) is a quiet, timid artist who shuns contact with any of her fellow students, especially the male students. It is even rumored that she has a fear of men. One cool spring day, the two meet by chance in a park - and are drawn further together by Qiluo's sketch of a mother and her child. Ling, whose mother died when he was very young, is deeply touched by this sketch; Qiluo herself, though still wary of the unpredictable Ling, appreciates that for the first time, someone understands her art.

"I used to hate to go to school. Every morning, before leaving the house, I would say a little prayer: that no one would talk to me that day. But now...now I look forward to going there." - Qiluo to Ling

The two sense a connection, which they first try to deny, and then, accept. But each person has their own personal struggles with which to come to terms. Ling is haunted by his past - the tragic loss of his twin brother and the murky memories of his mother - as well as his tempestuous relationship with his father. Qiluo was sexually abused when she was younger, and fears intimacy. When the figures from Ling's past turn up and he is forced to resolve his nightmares, Qiluo stands by him; when Ling discovers Qiluo's fears, he stands by her.

"It's too late now. No matter how much I cry, it won't change anything...Sheng will never come back. I will never hear his voice again. Everything's too late...: - Ling, crying.

But there is a third figure in that of Fan Tong Dao (An Jun Can), a first-year student, who worships the reckless Ling. Tong Dao was released from a mental clinic (the same place Ling had gone to for treatment after his twin's death) and nurses an unhealthy obsession for Ling, whom he believes understands the same desire to kill, and to watch people suffer. Furious that Qiluo appears to be taming the wilder side of Ling's character, Tong Dao attempts to kill her; later, enraged by Ling's pity, he tries to destroy Ling.

"I told you - if I lose Qiluo, I will not let you off. No matter how long it takes, no matter what I have to do, I will hunt you down, and I will take revenge." - Ling to Tong Dao

A live-action drama adaptation of MARS started airing in Taiwan in 2004.
From YesAsia.com: An adaptation of the popular Japanese manga MARS, this television series is directed by the acclaimed Cai Yue Xun. Vic plays two characters, twin brothers with an explosive, dark, and tragic passion. Zero is reckless, brutal and passionate, losing himself in the thrilling speed of motorcycles. On the other hand, Saint is quiet and reserved, lives in satisfaction and peace, and expresses his passion in drawing. They are a pair of loving brothers until the arrival of Saori, and when Saint cannot accept the fact that Saori loves Zero, he commits suicide. Zero is destroyed by the guilt of Saint's death, and ends up in a mental instituation for two years...until the arrival of Kira (Barbie Xu), who manages to reach the deepest wounds buried within Zero. Kira suffers from autism after a traumatic event from her childhood; can she discover the most beautiful thing in the world - love - again?

MARS features an impressive production, and the thrilling motorcycle races were shot on location in Japan! Both Vic and Barbie received rave reviews for their performances, and with other young stars in support, MARS is undoubtedly one of the best Taiwanese television shows of 2004!

=====================================
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_(TV_series) source
Themes
Mars explores rather dark and morbid issues, discusses social taboos such as mental illness, sexual harassment, suicide, and murder but also maintains an underlying sense of hope.
Mental Illness - Ling's Mom, Ling himself and Tong Dao had to seek help from the same mental institution. Somehow only Ling had managed to walk out of his destructive mental state while the other two allowed themselves to sink deeper into despair and hopelessness.
Sexual harassment - This idol drama detached itself from other Taiwan idol dramas by exploring various sexual issues in a sensitive and delicate manner.

Suicide - Ling's Mom and Sheng chose suicide instead of facing up to reality. This drama further explores the state of the loved ones who were left behind, and how they deal with the grief of loss and recover from the heartaches of abandonment.

Murder - Viewed as a weapon to fulfill ones' desire. Ling's Mom wanted to kill Ling and Sheng out of love and possesiveness to protect them. Tong Dao murdered Qing Mu for complex reasons; revenge, freedom, boredom. Ling wanted to murder in LA for revenge and to protect Sheng. Even Qi Luo spoke about murdering her stepfather over and over again in her nightmares, so that the person she hated would disappear from the world.

Hope - The difference between destruction and rebuilding; between Ling and Sheng; Qi Luo and Tong Dao. A significant milestone in the series reflecting this sense of hope is when Qi Luo contemplates how the huge sandcastle they had built will eventually be destroyed. Ling reassures her that they will rebuild the sandcastle together, no matter how many times it takes. They can't prevent destructive and tragic events from happening in their lives, but together, with hope, they can pick themselves up and rebuild their lives.

I love my all region dvd player. Thanks CC for hooking me up! My mini DVD player is rotten. UGGGGH. But I am stuck with it.
Anyways, complaint aside (not worth being unhappy about as life is too short and I would rather be HAPPY!) I caught some interesting films some better than others.
I think my fave was FORBIDDEN QUEST then MISSION SEX CONTROL with DREAM HOLIDAY coming in last.
FORBIDDEN QUEST (2006) 음란서생 (Eum-ran-seo-saeng)

Forbidden Quest음란서생Year: 2006Director: Kim Dae-Wu
Actors: Han Seok-Kyu, Lee Beom-soo and Kim Min-jeong Length: 139 min

Synopsis:Yun-seo, a world weary Korean aristocrat, and Gwang-heon, an old enemy of Yun-seo’s family, come together in the story of the Heukgokbisa, one of Korea’s most famous and lurid novels. The historical drama follows Yun-seo as, chancing upon an erotic novel, he decides to publish his own—and enlists Gwang-heon to illustrate it. When the Heukgokbisa starts circulating at court, the scandalous story takes on a life of its own.

This film was very long but did not seem so for me. I loved the costumes and how Yun Seo is very scholarly and honest to a fault. Even after his brother was punished, he did not join them in their revenge. But later when he is bored and discovers the underground network of lurid novels he is intrigued and joins in. For me, I enjoy period pieces a lot. I think it is the etiquette, costumes and just overall feel. The film is actually pretty tame in terms of what is insinuated but overall an interesting film.

Holiday Dreaming (夢遊夏威夷)

Above link talks about HOLIDAY DREAMING a Taiwanese film from 2004
Holiday Dreaming is by first-time director Hsu Fu-chun (徐輔軍) about two friends who are about to end their time in the military. But before they do so, they are told to go on "vacation" but really to catch an AWOL soldier Kuen He who stole a rifle. Kuen He just cannot accept that his girlfriend does not want to be with him any longer. Ah Zhou has a weird dream of his old crush that she died. So while on their 'vacation' he searches her out to discover she is not whom he remembers her to be. While his friend who is a womanizer gets his share of troubles.
I have to say I was not feeling this movie. I have to say for Taiwanese films I don't like the majority but from Ang Lee or Hao Hsiao Hsien (I love both of them). But is hard for me to enjoy other films from Taiwan.

Mission Sex Control (2006) - 잘 살아보세 (Jal Sal-a-bo-se).
Directed by Ahn Jin Woo, Live Good, a.k.a. Mission Sex Control, takes a tongue-in-cheek look at 1970s Korea. Starring Lee Bum Soo and Kim Jung Eun

In 1971 birth control was a major policy drive of the Korean government. Nevertheless, one poor farming village went against the trend, boasting the highest fertility rate in the country. This peaceful Yongdu Village receives an unwelcome visitor, the national family planning officer Hyun-joo, to oversee the villagers nocturnal pleasures. However as a single lady with little experience of her own, Hyun-joo finds it nearly impossible persuade the residents to use contraception. She finally appoints the village head Suk-gu as the local support officer and thus begins the '0\% Birth Rate Project.' Appointing him brings more turmoil to the villagers and when the President comes to inspect...

======================================
I loved the campiness of this film. Seeing Lee Beom Soo in this film is different than his role in "Forbidden Quest". It was interesting seeing how all the missteps and difficulties the villagers are having when trying to follow this birth control initiative to intense disapproval and lack of support. But through her perserverance and the assistance of Suk-gu (a local villager) they are on their way to being the worst to the best statistics with this new campaign. It was kitschy but enjoyable with some moments of humor.

Small things that make me feel good...the big one is helping others...

I always believed strongly in giving back to the community. When I think of it, my folks never really mentioned that at home. In fact when I said I was volunteering, they wanted me to earn money or do other things. We don't formally practice any religion, but I respect others in their viewpoints and ideas. I guess we are mix of confucianism and buddhism (even then not really).
Through the years, I have always felt a sense of satisfaction by exploring the world, learning new cultures, eating different foods, watching interesting films, show, art and traveling. But another thing that I really enjoyed, spending time with people who like to help others. Even if it is a small thing, I feel it is better than nothing. Like recently, I adopted this gal from Korea. I met her on the plane ride home (Narita to Ohare) and this is when I had my sprained ankle (I know I am remiss on my Asia journal here). When I told her to go to the "visitors" area during customs and immigration, little would I know I would become good friends with her. Later on at the gate heading to Boston, I see her again. With our mix of Konglish we spark a simple but interesting conversation between the both of us. We were unable to grab a seat together, but we separated. When I got off, I waited for her to take her to the baggage claim. (I love helping others and telling others on things to do, see and eat in Boston! Or in whatever capacity I can help others with what I know.). I called her host family and we found her ride to them. I thought it was the last I would see her. But as a traveller, I always appreciated the kindness of others. I always try to give back!

I am always the person who will walk by if someone is taking a pic of someone---I'll ask them,"Do you want to all be in the photo?" Or if anyone is holding up a map, "I will ask, can I help direct you?" Maybe I am in the wrong field and job. Hmmmm. I just have too many interests.

Anyways back to JH, since then I wrote an email saying nice meeting you. She eventually called me and since then we have hungout a few times. I have taking pride in showing her the USA in Boston . From seven courses of fish, NE Clam chowder and fried calamari, european hot chocolate, Bartley's hamburger to dim sum in Chinatown we have done alot. Of course it goes without saying I took her to my two FAVE museums in Boston MFA and Gardner.
Or the friend whose friend started a library for kids in Ecuador and needed English books for kids. I made sure to send a few along. Or the fund raisers to bring up awareness for Asian Americans on Diabetes or to raise funds for local organizations that foster ESL, job training for immigrants, affordable housing as well to funds for battered Asian women and children to fighting hunger in the local area. These are the things that make me feel alive and great! Another thing I did recently was interview a local student for my alma mater. Wow I was so impressed by the HS student I interviewed. She was very articulate, intelligent and composed but she could have been an "at risk" kid to not graduate if it weren't for the Boston busing program and her perserverence and having great mentors to influence her there is more to life than being knocked up in your teens without a father.

There are many ways to give back, do something today! It can be done in many ways, by helping a person, or working as a volunteer take your pick! It is good to get out and do things!

Life this Week

(Long time no post here)

I caught an interesting period movie that I will talk about in another entry. Afterwards I do stay up to make some baked goods, my new fave things to make are mini green tea muffins!
Sunday--I get up and usher again. I tend to do alot of ushering in spurts plus I am making up for not ushering in January. I share some muffins. Then I head over to GARI (my second time) and my friend is late. I decide to indulge in the New York Style sashimi (four pieces of very fresh sashimi over a bed of inoki mushrooms drizzled with some cool oils). Even the seaweed salad is pretty topped with a taro chip and mini flower and the vinigarette is very nice and not too overpowering. When my friend SN arrives, I am stoked. She got me a framed copy of the Harvard employee newspaper article when we first me each other years ago. She is like a big sis to me! We hang out and she also gives me some chocolates. I hand over muffins, PC of Changdeok gung and we just catch up and reminisce. I get the lunch special $13 when it comes it out on a big white plate it is pretty. But not as a great value as Fugakyu's which is a buck or two more.
Afterwards, I get a ride to the PRU to meet up with Jae Hee and we hang out. I go to the "Hey Let's GO" Superbowl Sunday event and see my buds Jade and our friend SChin. Jade saved some cookies she made in DEC while I was touring Japan and Seoul. Boy were these cookies delectable! Thanks a million Jade! Then I do head for a little bit to Hee Won's Super Bowl party. I meet some of their friends and kids. I have some conference calls. I sit in on them.
My highlight is seeing my friend's hubby Joe get all excited when Prince did NOT sing the songs he said he would not sing so he won the BET portion with his siblings about $200 bucks. But I guess his friendly bets with his siblings made the Colts and Bears game more interesting with the Colts eventually winning with MVP Peyton Manning getting his first Superbowl Ring and accolades befitting his USA football heritage. Later we figure out how to get Jae Hee back home (which by car is not so bad).
Monday---Work with the intern she is quiet by very nice. She just got a project to do some research. Luckily she has a laptop to use our WIFI. Amazing with technology and having a wifi connection. After work, I meet up with MPK and TK for dinner at my fave HELMAND. I adore this place for tis Kaddo, Banjan, Chowpan. Plus they loved the oven baked bread, three different spices the dessert choice I made. All in all a very SUCCESSFUL meal again! Monday night is the coldest. My fingers and hand were numb and red after 1 minute being exposed in the cold while chatting with my bro (temp in the teens).
Etienne sparked some interesting internal thoughts with his entry today (as he is a day ahead). It was involving family and expectations. Also how family members will use their kids lives to relive what they could or did not do. But the talk about varying levels of love is true. You have familial, friends and to others. Some deep rooted feelings long surpressed emerged after some 'free writing' in response.
Tues---Another day with the intern and we chat about life she tells me she is attending Justin's concert. Truth be told, I figure he is a good performer and must be great to catch live, she is going in a group that night. (later she told she was at the concert for 4 hours and did not get home til 1am!).I head out to show my friend's Eastie digs to a potential renter. I have to race back home to have a conference call to coordinate a leadership retreat in Philly.
Wed--Quiet day as my boss is out all day at training. I learning more process stuff for annual meetings and creating docs for agendas and using Yahoo Finance too. It is interesting. After work, go to "Yet Ding Ho" with the folks for early Chinese New Year with HF. As my mom says, needs "Ho yee tao" something with good meaning. The place is on Tyler and has pretty good food. For the whole meal with tip rounded out to be $100 for 5 people with 5 dishes majority seafood! Seafood soup, empress chicken (hands down one of the best and it is NOT soy sauce chicken), Jok Yee (steamed with scallion, ginger and soy), stirfried clams and black bean sauce, Jok yee bo (pot baked fish with veggies) and we got a complimentary bowl of "hong dao saw" red bean soup. I gave my folks the stuff I bought last weekend and a calendar of Chinese painting in a calendar from Yun Bing during Kang Xi's reign during the Qing Dynasty.
*Watch a boring Taiwanese movie I later found out won some accolades at Film Festival . (HOHUM!)
Ok I learned what an enema is today. The thing that made me laugh hysterically was the positioning of the people on the box. Or as one position my mom calls "the salute".
THU---Work the contractor renovating the work space Wendy rocks. I like her energy and spunk. The hallway painting is done and not bad. But next is the offices and I am dreading being swathed in paint fumes and having so hardships doing my job business as usual. My friend JSV called and had a bridesmaids dilemma.
I have to meet up with the guy who I met on Tuesday night wants to rent my friend's place. He is doing a consulting gig in Back Bay which is perfect, as I rarely dine in Back Bay the same night with a treasured and dear friend and mentor DW. I drop off the keys, get the signed contract. Then I head to 33 Stanhope for 33 Restaurant which has an option to have the $33 prefixe (with the only choice being the middle or second course between chicken or tilapia. The amuse buche was nice, chicken lumpia. The soup with crab croquette was delicious. I enjoyed my tilapia over a bed of different grains and I loved my friend's chicken with bits of gravy and sausage. We both thought the peach cobbler a bit overwhelming and too sweet. But to try it, it did take a long time to come out! After two hours later, we parted ways. I got home and caught my fave shows.
Yes I only caught 10 minutes of Ugly Betty but I love that show. As for Grey's it is the first episode of a 3 episode arc starting with the Ferry Accident.
All the while I had to juggle rsvps for an event for my alma mater I am planning this weekend in Harvard Square. Plus I have the minutes for meeting I am delinquent in doing (I typed them up but had to edit but just no time to edit with no computer to do it at home).
Tonight I talked to a good friend who I miss alot who I first had a meal with at Helmand. She had some thoughts on things and I hope I helped her straighten them out. My sis says I do well on the advice part as I am 1) non judgemental 2) will listen 3) give sound advice being an outsider.
Friday (today) work is busy with the two file cabinets finally arriving. I am learning the innerworkings of MGPro. It is amazing what information you can get just by inputting some stuff. I prep paperwork and the processes for my boss. I stay later to get stuff needed to be done.
