Bad Love - Preview

This drama is out in Korea and I cannot wait to really watch it. I am a fan of Kwon Sang Woo and Lee Yo Won. Of course the eye candy of Kim Sung Soo and Kwon Sang Woo does not hurt. In the first episode is one of the most raciest in any I have seen for Korean drama.

Holiday present from my boss

As any worker bee drone, I have had my fair share of different bosses. From my father, to supervisors at various jobs from work study (in college), internship (Harvard Medical School) to full time positions post college, I have spent the holidays with many different companies.
Appreciation to employees I have usually seen were holiday cards, holiday pay, year end bonus and a nice holiday party from the various companies. But I have had two bosses or supervisors with stick out for being very cool. Granted, you should not be judging your boss based on what you receive but in the span of a holiday present, I was happy. For me, ultimately being appreciated as a colleague for my efforts is very important and not to be taken for granted.
So the presents from previous boss have been cooking oils, Coach Wallet, and $50 gift card to Cheesecake Factory. This current boss has been really cool. I got a digital camera (first one to ever own) and this year got a lovely scarf and Coach bag. Frankly, I am happy with a nice meal and being appreciated but the present was a lovely gesture. Last year's camera has been well used! I have taken a ton of photos in ONE year.

My boss' wife chose the bag's style.

COACH ERGO BELTED SIGNATURE FLAP Style No: 11277

I still love my Canon PowerShot 650 which now is considered old. So fast is the digital camera industry with the newest and hottest models.

But seriously the most important present I can get is good health! Without it, nothing is possible-work, volunteering, traveling etc because I would be unable to do the things I want to do. Though I am recovering from a cold, I am happy with how my life is right now. It is not perfect, I have my pressures from job, life, home and family but it is good to try to balance everything and remain positive!

Keepon-such a cutie!

In a not so recent EW issue, my sister went online to check out the Keepon. My sister is not keen on the physical looks of a robot. But this one is just tooooooo cute! The Keepon is a small robot that is utilized to react to music and the inventor likes to see how people react to the Keepon and other beatbots. The inventor Hideki Kozima 小嶋 秀樹, has been bringing Keepon all over the world.

Here is the youtube link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPdP1jBfxzo

The group Spoon and the dancing robot Keepon videos have started a craze! I love Keepon is adorable! I feel very happy when I look at Keepon! So does my sis! Such a simple robot but people just cannot help feeling great about themselves. Part of it is because is the color, yellow is such a bright, warm and positive shade! Plus its bopping movements with the beats is infectious! Sooooo coool!

Your being tacky...not a way to be remembered...

Admit it, you have met those people in your life you felt were a bit, "tight" with their money. I do understand that people need to be economical and save money. Being "cheap" and a "tight wad" do conjure up unsavory images of people who are tacky, unkind and unsocial. The actual truth is farther from this perception because it is one thing to be frugal, it is another to be tacky. I know it is a fine line.

Being Chinese, my Chinese friends love to joke how "cheap" the Chinese can be. Then again you can say that for a lot of people "cheap" and "insert ethnicities" akin to lateness. For example, my friends joke Asian do not attend events on time but on "Asian Time" meaning later is better or at least 1 to 2 hours into a party they are invited to attend. My Filipino friends, Latino friends and other have joked the same thing about the lack of punctuality to events. Same for cheapness, but it does not mean being tacky.

What is tacky? I am going with the "in poor taste" definition (Online Etymology Dictionary, © 2001 Douglas Harper). One incident that comes to mind that my friends hailed as tacky was this situation. Tonight, there is a party my friend was invited to attend. It is someone within her social sphere but she is not close to this person. It is a small cocktail party to fit 30 people and the evite was sent out two weeks ago. (In the past, this person has had to cancel many an event due to lack of interest or attendance for the event this person planned.) Thus far, 6 people have rsvped. The instructions were strict, all guests must rsvp, must arrive by 7:30pm-8pm and must confirm with host if they can or cannot bring a guest. On top of this, the recent count was previously 14 people and it went down because after the party planner had decided to charge each guest via PayPal $10 to attend this party. My friend is in a bind. Her guest who wanted to go to this party (my friend was not interested in going) bailed after finding out the $10 fee. Plus she is not keen on going alone as the rest of the guest list are not her usual sphere of friends. I told her these are a few options:

a) Change her "YES" to "MAYBE" and not show up
b) Change response to "NO" and give regrets but I cannot make it.
c) Totally do not go and do not change response (very irresponsible).
d) If original answer was "MAYBE" keep it so

There was an article written about the pressures of evite invitations in WSJ last year how people feel pressured to write something witty if they can, cannot, or might be able to attend an event on a evite. No more plain-yes, no or maybes. People feel the need to be creative with their responses and not be thought of as boring. Who would have thought? (BTW, my friend had put in the response "maybe" and is not attending now as the company holiday party is the same night.)

Another tacky situation was for a wedding. Weddings are all about being there for the friend, sometimes flying in, getting rental car, hotel, attending a rehearsal dinner, and getting a present for the bride and groom. You are lucky to get more than 10 words or a photo with the happy couple. A few years back, one acquaintance in an organization I was active in invited a lot of people in the organization. I got the registry and the only choice was a $100 gift card for a local furniture store. I thought it was odd! Well, other people talked and complained they were only given the $50 furniture store option! (They way the invite was worded made it seem the couple really really wanted your furniture gift card present.) Many were turned off and I guess I was thought of as a better friend so I was supposed to cough up more money? I am not against giving more money to close friends, in fact I do. But I like to have the option to give what I want, have a more reasonable registry and other times I end up making presents for close friends who are the married couple.

Being tacky is not the way to go! Think before you act and if you are not sure get some counsel. The party planner is not a young person but an established working professional with a high position in a good publicly traded company. The now married couple were a bit older and in their early 30's. So age does not necessarily equate to maturity.

Also, spending a ton of money does not mean everyone at your party is going to have a great time! Some of the best functions, weddings and celebrations were enjoyed due to the guests in attendance, the geniune enjoyment of everyone around me were great celebrations, weddings or parties.

Musings on Travel

My boss just back from his business/personal trip to Asia. He went to Seoul and his wife's hometown in Southern China. They had brought their young kids and thought one visit to Seoul was plenty. I personally had a blast but then part of it was I can understand some Korean, love the dramas, love the food and history. It was only within the last few years after my Korean drama fixation have I wanted to put South Korea on my traveling map. Even when my brother was there and my friends have visited there, it was not high on my list to visit over Japan, China, Thailand, Vietnam within Asia.

My boss and I had an interesting conversation about Seoul. I loved my time there. My boss was not so enthused. Partially not knowing the language, plus having two jetlagged young kids in tow, he and his wife were really limited in what they could do while in Seoul. They enjoyed Namdaemun and Myeong Dong for the shopping and the food. But once was enough for them to visit South Korea. I felt a bit sad. I did have a great time but it did help to have a great friend and hostess there. Though I ventured a bit by myself, they were hindered needing to take cabs than the subway system (which I got used to using while in Seoul) with the kids in tow. Plus without a local host, it was not as enjoyable.

When the usual person thinks of East Asia to visit, it is more Japan and China. For my boss, he thought Japan was more compelling than Korea and he felt that it was a not as exciting to be there. I can see what he means. But South Korea was great to me.I do want to go back to see friends, visit other historical places and hit Jeju Island. Hopefully by then, my Korean will be better or as good as my listening. I have yet to take a Korean language lesson. But the constant listening to Korean spoken in the dramas has helped my own basic understanding and knowledge. (I picked up my Cantonese that way by watching a lot of Andy Lau dramas/movies and listening to Anita Mui, Alan Tam, Jacky Cheung and Leslie Cheung songs.) The more you are immersed in a language the better you can become!

I cannot wait to go back again to Asia. But I think South East Asia is due for a visit!

Friend's holiday party

Last night, I attended a friend's holiday party in the burbs. It was the first time I attended after many years. I have been invited for a long time but due to travel, organization and work obligations I was unable to go. Finally this year I was able to go and bring my sis too.
It was great to attend. I saw many people I had not seen in years now married with kids. When we last hung out as a social group we were all single. Many have gone on to the next few stages in life. Right now, it was good to talk to people and catch up.

I met some very interesting people last night. I met a very nice Brazilian woman and she made some caipirinha (little peasant girl) made from cachaça. We discussed due to the sugar in this drink it can be lethal. It is delicious and easy to drink. But the after effects are lethal for one person who attended the party last year . While she drank the drink, she loved it. But it took her two days to recover from it! One you are drinking it, you just love the taste and feel you can drink more. I got to try some last night, I can see it being lethal. I decided to not have too much of it.

I met their nanny who is from China. Turns out she is from the same village my dad is from. She is retired and has worked as a nurse with over 31 years experience. I got to talk to her and heard my dad's dialect for the first time. It is more like Cantonese than Toisanese (which sounds very provincial) in comparison. It was fun chatting with her. I have always found talking to a variety of people and my elders to be fun throughtout my life.

When I was a kid, my folks had a Chinese restaurant. I got to befriend many customers and many were older. Somehow the local newspaper heard about my friendship with an customer. It was just past the Tiannamen Square incident. I was in junior high and my friend was an immigrant from Easter Europe and her family were Holocaust survivors. Our friendship was profiled as the cover of the "lifestyle" section. They thought a young Chinese American teen and older Jewish woman being friends was an interesting article.

I always like to have friends from all walks of life and ages. There are so many great people I can learn so much from but also learn a lot about myself too. I have gotten so much great advice and cherished memories and experiences along the way.

Last night, it was nice many people I had not seen in awhile and new people too. To many more new and fun memories and gatherings!

Second major snow storm in(two days)

Second major snow storm in(two days)

Last night, the most recent snow storm arrived. I woke up to see more snow and then it started to rain. So nice fluffy snow is changing to slush. So my prior plans to have a day trip are stalled. It is sad, but I am flexible. I have to study and I have some things to handle to give back to my mom.

So the timing worked out that I can accomplish all these things in a more timely manner due to the weather. Since I do not have work today, it feels like a snow day away from responsibilities and time for fun. Or just snuggle in bed and not get out. I did get up very early and chatted with a friend. Then made some food and then later on sent my sis off to work.

I cannot believe Christmas is next week. Time has sure flown. This week will be busy before then at work and socially.

First Snow of the winter

Yesterday (12/13/2007), we got hit with the snow that has come over from the midwest. It started at 12:30 and did not stop until late last night-total of 10 inches total. I started shoveling a few times (by my office) twice. By the time I left to go home, it was as if I had not shoveled the snow due to the wind and drifts.

While I was shoveling the first time around, a big Coke Cola truck was stuck. My work offices is on a busy main street. Let's just say many frustrated drivers were not happy. My sister already saw abandoned cars as early as 1:30pm when she was walking around the neighborhood during the early part of the snowstorm.

Since I live close to work, I cannot use the excuse I need to need to go home early to get home safely. Despite the snow and almost falling down (thanks to the icy base a few times), I got home in 15 minutes. I walked slowly and saw many cars bumper to bumper in traffic or stuck in the snow. The snow this time really wreaked havoc. The schools were smart to end school before the snow storm!

Luckily the snow was soft and powdery. The first snow of this year was wet and slushy (this type is heavier to shovel) and I get colder faster. This morning I finished off reshoveling and sweeping the steps. I just checked outside and the snow and ice had melted away already. One thing we do not need is a ice on the sidewalks and steps.

When I was a kid I loved snow. Now I think of it as more of a nuisance than anything else. What happened to the innocence of loving the school snow days, snow ball fights, sledding, making snow angels or making snow men gone? Time and age have paved way to safety from getting to point A to point B is more important.

My friend's husband is visiting from South Korea. I hope he had a safe flight. I hope he has time so I can take him around Boston. The snowstorm has greeted him on his first business trip to the USA. But since he is here for work, he might not have a lot of time to spend outside his work obligations.

One of my acquaintances took 2 hours to take the commuter rail from South Station to Wellesley. Another friend took 5 hours to get from Dorchester to Somerville! Plus last night my sister said that many bus routes are limited to big roads (no hills and small streets) and even the "E" train line did not go past Brigham Circle due to the crazy traffic last night.

Worst holiday present to receive ever?...

My sister surfs the web more than moi. So recently, she shared some doozy of stories of a forum she was reading (over 300 pages) within "money central". This is one my sister thought took the cake and I have to agree.

For a little background on our family, we only got one gift maybe two a piece for myself and my siblings growing up. Part of the reason was economics and the other was my folks did not want us be spoiled or materialistic. Other than being a season of parties, holiday cards and such Christmas is not a big deal to our family.

Here is one of the stories from that message board on msn money.

The worst-ever christmas gift?

We were laughing so hard I think shewas offended. We have a Christmas party with all our friends at the lake. Everyone brings a white elephant gift. Myhusband is tooo nice and thinks he has to bring a"nice" gift which he did. He opens the gift he endedup with and it is a frozen road killed dead weasel. (top that for a bad gift!) I am not kidding. Thehost and hostess were both distressed that he was going to put this down on their designer furniture. This year we are all bringing gifts to be donated to charity.

BSCC Holiday Party

We just had our holiday party that I helped plan at the College Club in the Back Bay. It was my second holiday party for my alma mater for the local club. I am glad that I had a chance to do it. But I find when you have special events, you really cannot socialize as much as you are trying to get things done.

We had Groove a capella group perform and they drove in from Western Mass (Smith College) for the holiday party. Smith Alums are always glad to see undergrads. They sang a great half hour set with a mix of holiday songs and other songs such as "Dreams", "One Fine Day", "I"ll Stop the World (Melt with You)", "I'll Be Home for Christmas", "Moondance" and their "Groove Medley" were some of the songs they sang.

Jesse of the College Club was wonderful! Their food and staff were amazing! The space lovely and we all loved the delicious punch, baked brie, fruit, and the passed finger foods were great from the fig topped goat cheese cracker, chicken and shrimp appetizers were among some big hits with the guests. Everyone had so much fun, we had to be shooed out because we did not want to leave the event.

Thanks to all those who helped most especially my co-chair for doing a great job with the mailing, invitation it was fabulous! Aud, and Christina for doing door duty with me. Big thanks to Phoebe for helping me out with everything from the name tags, registration duties and just being a great help.A warm thank you goes to Amy M and her firm Ruberto, Israel & Weiner for their sponsorship of the party!

Looking forward to the afternoon tea at the Taj later on this coming February 9, 2008 which should be lovely.

Top Chef Holiday $20,000 Competition special

Last night, there was a special $20,000 Top Chef Holiday Special that had 8 Top Chef contestants through the different seasons come back for an hour and half tv special. After all was said and done, Tiffani Faison (finalist and season 1) and Tre Wilcox (season 3) were the two left standing to duke it out for the grand prize. Since they did such a great job, the judges threw them for a loop to make a fourth course and they only had half an hour to make it. They were free to use their leftovers and the other contestants' as well to make their fourth and final dish.
Ads for the next Top Chef show it is is going to be filmed in Chicago for the Fourth Season.
Tiffani Faison is the winner and finally a female chef won something through all these competitions through all these seasons. She originally was in the first season and she lost to Harold Dieterle. Her winning fourth dish was a sophisticated pastry dish utilizing the "leftovers" theme and Tre went with a crepe dessert.

Buddytv recap of this special holiday episode:

The chefs have $350 and three hours, and they head out to Whole Foods to shop. There's plenty of protein to go around, and so the shopping goes fairly smoothly. Tre misses out on the celery root he wanted – Stephen got it all – but the quality was not that great, he thinks, so he's not upset about it.Shopping went well for all…until they get back to the kitchen. When they return, Betty realized she did not buy yeast, a necessary component for her first course. After a momentary panic, she figures out a solution. She has phyllo dough for a baklava final course. Since she can't get to the final course without a good first one, she decides to change her first course to a cherry-duck “baklava” and will figure out the final course later.Sandee is taking a big risk: she's making a chocolate pecan pie for the third course, and she has only made pie crust once before. Um, crazy much? I like Sandee but isn't pie crust like one of the most difficult things to do well without practice?

Tom Colicchio comes in and makes the rounds. Stephen seems a little nervous – as he did in the Quickfire. He admits he's been focused on his restaurant, and might be a little rusty. The three hours is up and chefs serve. In addition to the usual judges, Tom, Padma, Gail Simmons and Ted Allen, there are several guest judges from previous episodes, including Eric Ripert again, Alan Wong, and more. The dishes are served and they dig in. Marcel's fish impresses; Sandee's soup does not. They find it “watery.” Stephen's gnocchi is too heavy – Ted Allen drops it on a plate to demonstrate how heavy and it sounds like a rock. The judges are a little confused by Betty's “baklava.” Tre's dish goes over well, but Tiffani's seems a little too light for some.

The chefs have returned to the kitchen; they have a half hour to finish the next course, although two people will be bringing down a dish that will not be eaten. Marcel is having trouble, as are Josie and Betty, who both overcook their protein. The judges discuss the first round; Betty, Sandee, Stephen and CJ are the worst. CJ, however, is safe due to his Quickfire win.The chefs all come back with their next course, but it's Stephen and Sandee who have to return to the kitchen with their courses uneaten. Stephen looks stunned at first, but later says he realizes he is maybe more of a restaurateur than a chef. For the second course, as expected, Betty and Sandee get dinged for being overcooked. Marcel's is just “bad” says Ted Allen. Tre's and Tiffani's dishes go over well, though. For the second course, it's Sandee and Betty who will not be returning.

This leaves Marcel, Tiffani, Tre and CJ in the final four. Both Tre and Marcel made lamb, and the judges think Tre's is a clear standout over Marcel's. CJ's dessert course tastes nice, but looks sloppy. Tiffani's butterscotch pudding, however, Tom thinks is the best dish of the evening.

When the final four are called back, CJ and Marcel are dismissed right away. CJ looks really devastated, and admits he needs the $20,000 pretty badly. But did you think that was it? Of course that's not it! Tiffani and Tre must have a cook-off! Tiffani looks absolutely pissed off, but in interview, she says she's mad at herself for not realizing this would happen. They have to return to the kitchen, and use any and all leftovers to make another course.

They dash back and Tiffani grabs Stephen, Sandee and Josie to help her, to Tre's chagrin. He wanted Stephen and his uneaten braised veal. Tiffani decides to make a refined “leftover sandwich” using puff pastry and some of the veal. Tre mainly has Betty's dessert ingredients, so he has to make a dessert, just what he was trying to avoid. He makes a raspberry and walnut crepe with a white chocolate sauce. The chefs enjoy them both, but it appears pretty obvious that Tiffani's is the winner. They are called back to the official judges' table, where that is, in fact, the verdict. Tiffani is thrilled to win it for the ladies, and Tre is still glad he could redeem himself in another Top Chef competition.

Robot Chicken rocks!

One of the best most UN-PC you will ever watch is "Robot Chicken". I look forward to each new 15 minute episode on Adult Swim on its third season. It is amazing stuff! The humor pushes the envelope and can be twisted but oh so fun! "Robot Chicken" is from the brains of Seth Green (known as the Willow's boyfriend and from the Austin Powers movies) and Matthew Senreich. I am psyched that they have won an emmy too!

Robot Chicken's Half-Assed Christmas Special Future Christmas Special is going to premiere on Adult Swim this coming Sunday, December 9th and I cannot wait!

I cannot wait for their upcoming supersized holiday special. They did have a hilarious Star Wars episode that was HILARIOUS!

The program is a sketch show that parodies a number of pop culture conventions using stop motion animation of toys, action figures, dolls, and claymation (usually for special effects) and various other objects, such as tongue depressors and Game of Life pegs. (wikipedia)

Project Runway Season 4 thus far

I have been watching Project Runaway religiously and Season Four, I have been catching all the episodes. It is hard to say who will make the finale as in previous competitions I could figure out my faves. As for a lot of shows, when it has been around for a bit of time, more talented people come out to try to be on the show. Such as the last season of Top Chef and this season (#4) of Project Runway are perfect examples.

So far out of the first four episodes: Rami Kashou (bits of fabrics), Victorya Hong (design something for Sarah Jessica Parker's line BITTEN with Steve and Barry stores), Jack Mackenroth (design outfit for Tiki Barber) and last night Jillian Lewis (team of 3 utilizing three passe trends) have been victorious.

After talking with Ji, she and I have noticed those who have won the first challenges so far in Project Runway have made it to the finale. I wonder if this will work again for Rami. I truly believe he has a strong chance. Per his BravoTV Bio he has dressed many famous stars on the red carpet and his fashion designs are sold in select high end boutiques worldwide.

What is Project Runway without a runaway "strong" person who stands out? This year there is no serious defiant or militant or strong "personality" as previous season such as Santino Rice (when he ran his mouth a lot during the season) or season three winner Jeffrey Sebelia. Two stick out and one person who stands out right now is Elisa Jimenez for her wacky methods of work (episode two when she spit on her fabric to mark it). She is calm and her new age persona is different from the type A characters. Carmen Webber (a former model) was a bit sassy but she is no longer around. I will have to say Christian Siriano started out very annoying and out there but he has tapered off his attitude after being on the "lower rungs" and almost being offed from the show. Though he may have the talent and worked for awesome designers at the young age of 21, he still has much tough competition amongst the more experienced designers in the mix.

I am not sure who will make the finale but it is good to watch week to week to get my fix. I notice more well constructed and fitted work in comparison to season's past. Plus Heidi Klum has stepped it up on her comments and being more frank and verbal in comparison to other seasons. Is it because of Michael Kors and Nina Garcia's influence?

For the first episode, Rami was true to himself and his evening dresses he has designed allowing him to win in comparison to strong designs from Victorya and Christian. The second episode Victorya's simple but well constructed dress with the cute raceback plaid vest won (though she partnered with Kevin did have some stiff competition that episode from team of Elsa & Sweet P). The third episode was difficult for the majority of the contestants as they do not usually deal with menswear. It really showed on the pieces that was sent down the runaway. Carmen who was offed did not even complete a shirt for her outfit. Jack was smart and though he originally wanted three pieces he sent down two well made pieces smartly using a pinstripe design that could have been too much but was not. Kit (great use of fleece blazer and Kevin's outfits were strong but Jack won out. Last night, the trio led by Jillian with Rami and Kevin did well. Kevin was seriously underbudgeting his time but he pulled a miracle and had a well made item (shorts) in the last hour. Their trends were overalls, 70's flare, and poodle skirt. Their nearest competitor was the trio of Christian, Jack and Kit who had the trends zootsuit, pleather and fringe.

So now 11 designers remain until next week's episode. I think lingerie designer Ricky Lizalde will be offed soon as he has been skating thin ice the last few episodes. He has a good heart but he needs to step it up on the caliber of his work-stitching, finishing and fit. Even the judges have commented they are surprised how the "fit" is horrible (especially on last night's episode) so I would not be surprised he is offed within the next few episodes.

Lockout and other things...

One of the reason's I always disliked living by myself is locking myself out. My current apartment charges $200 on the weekends if you do such a thing. My old apartment, my landlord lived on the second floor and never charged me. She was great and I lived there for a long time until it was my time to go.

Last night, I locked myself out. It did not help that women change bags and I am one of them. Because I had a smaller bag than usual and I was wrestling with the recycling I forgot my bag. Plus the type of lock at work is the one that you do not need a key to lock the door. So once I closed the door shut, I then realized, OOPS I need my keys. Not only my keys, my wallet and cell were all in there. AIYAH moment! Luckily it was 7:30pm and I rationalized my sis would be home.

WRONG! The one day I want her to be on time from work, she is held over and got home an hour later. I was outside for an hour and it was cold last night. (Not as cold as Saturday night-you merely stand for a minute and you feel the hypothermia coming.
Why is it that things are bad all come at once. Earlier had a warning letter and a quick turnaround time was needed to respond to the letter. (I just finished it and talked to the person who did the interview.) Now we do not get fined $100. (A definite incentive not to dally I must say!)

Luckily, after my last lockout, I decided to make a spare. I am SOOO glad I did. As my boss is not State Side and it would not have looked good to inform him that ---oh I can't go into work so for the next two weeks I will from home. (Umm not in this world anyways.) It would have been an ugly situation if I had to tell him the bad news. Plus I thought I brought the spare and I did not. Since I live so close to home, I had to go all the back and got the "real" keys. Luckily the ice is melting and not solid as a few nights ago.

Side note, big THANKS 謝謝從我的心 특별한 감사 to JI! You rock and are awesome! You are truly a life saver! The time I saved enabled me to edit the labels, fold the cards and stuff some envelopes! (Much better use of time than retyping the holiday card list!)

One good thing, I got my new duvet cover and down comforters! (Pretty speedy delivery from Overstock.com) as I had bought it the last week on Monday! I can give the down comforters to my parents then! They are looking forward to getting them!

The holiday party I am planning is slowly coming together. From a bit of panic end of last week, we are looking pretty good. I am excited about the a cappella group coming to perform and the food! It should be a great and fun event! It is tomorrow night! Four months of planning all for tomorrow night and it will be a great night!

Holiday card season

For the last two people I have been working for I have handled their holiday cards. I have to say it was easier at the computer software company as we had under 60 international vendors. I would handwrite the addresses onto the envelopes. For my personal holiday list, it has grown over the years. When I think I can cut it back, it grows yet again. UGGGGH! I don't have a computer so I also hand write the names and addresses on the envelopes. But I find it something not hard to do if I start early.

For my current boss, I find that mail merge is an awesome capability. (I used it here and there at other jobs) BUT I dislike you cannot do mail merge from Microsoft Excel documents. It is absurd and does not make sense. Why not? You can organize and sort names or zip codes with ease with an Microsoft Excel document. If I want to make labels I have to retype all the names and addresses. For some weird reason after our computer situation last year, I lost the Microsoft Excel document for all 170 names for the holiday card list. I have the one for 2005 but there is only 30 names there. This year, the list has grown to 260. I finally am collating and correcting all the addresses. Now I have to put them into a database in order to have them for address labels. More time to do something that should not take forever. I could handwrite the envelopes, but that would take some time and hand cramping on my part.

I am figuring I will invest the time to retype the names into a database. Then update as required so I can be a bit more efficient for next year. Computers and technology are lovely, but they are not fun when they go awry.

Role reversal

Roles are reversed right now...

I think it is funny that this year my boss is in Asia and last year I was in Asia. But he is going to China after three days in Seoul. Last year, I spent 12 days in Japan and 7 days in Seoul. Though it was cold, I had a blast in both places! It is always great to get away. But my trip was longer than his will be total number of days away from the office.

I forwarded to my boss my notes and research before I went to Seoul. I hope he is able to glean something from it. I know he is not much of a museum goer and with his kids he is limited to what he can do. I know his wife adores shopping and is an expert bargain hunter. I told him they had to go to Namdaemun. It is the place where all the wholesalers go to shop. It is always busy and hectic and the place to go if you don't want to deal with department store prices.

I am envious he can have a lot of great Korean food! YUMMY! Jealous! Plus the holiday cakes there are good, the Jeju Island mandarin oranges are in season. I have a lot of great memories from hanging out in Korea with my friend YJKim and her husband YJKim.

The First snow...

After experiencing the coldest weekend thus far since last winter, we had our first snow. The wind chill was low and you needed to wear the full winter regalia of a hat, gloves and scarf or else freeze if you went out over the weekend. I awoke to see this. Granted it is slushy and not fun as it was rainy too. (True it is a paltry amount.) I hope it does not become too cold tonight to change the slush to dangerous "ice". I walked to work in sneakers instead of my winter boots as I had not unearthed them yet. OOPS My bad.

Since starting my current job, I have been shoveling the snow off the stairwell and sidewalk in front of our building. At least today my hands did not freeze as the last time I shoveled last winter. Luckily it only took me 20 minutes to get it down. It helped the slush snow was not packed in!

Now that it is colder, I am looking forward to getting my first down comforter. Recently, I stayed a friend's and their guest room had a lovely down comforter. After my stay, I surfed the web and on Black Monday (I learned about this later on) I got some down comforters for myself and my parents at overstock.com. What made it more attractive, the shipping was free!

Today marks the first day of two weeks my boss is away. I have lots to catch up on and do but it is nice to be more relaxed to accomplish all the tasks I need to do.

Google just told me I just used up all the free memory for photos. Wow I used up a Gig of space. I guess I can 1) compress all the pics I have 2) delete all the pics and start over? Hmm or just have no pics on my blog. I find it is nice to have some pics.

Musings on my friendship

I find to me that friendships are important. I know as I get older, many friends come and go (move away from Beantown or pass through different phases in their lives) so it does not mean I think of them less. It is more we are all caught up in our own little part of the world. It is ok. But I try to do my part to keep that "link" with my friends. There are many people who have touched my life to make me who I am today.

I love my friends a lot and in an ideal world I could see them more often. But the reality is that I am not able to do so. I have many friends with families, busy with graduate school, work, and their activities. So when I am able to hear from a friend, it is always a pleasure. Thanks to technology, it is easier to keep in touch thanks to email, cell phones, photos websites to share photos-flickr, kodak photo gallery, shutterfly etc. If I am lucky, I am in my friend's neck of the woods and we are able to meet up. I am always excited and happy to my friends!

I have to say all my relationships both good and bad, I have learned about myself and with that knowledge learned more patience, maturity, and love for myself. Plus learning about what is important to me and qualities of people I tend to want to be around, respect and learn from. One friend, my big sis from Brazil, he has taught me through her warmth and affection. Another person who is no longer a close friend who was always late, did not respect my time, broke promises and never apologized made me realize the limits of my patience and tolerance. But because of this situation, I learnt that did not need this person in my life.

I have written in the past an entry on my thankfulness of various friends in my life. From those who took the time to show me their hometown, current town, hosting me, to spending time with me have always been appreciated. This path of life has been wonderful due to the enrichment of the generosity of friends and even strangers while I have meandered many a different road in different cities, countries, and towns.

Little things make me happy I have found. I feel the happiness and satisfaction of bringing a smile to someone's face, volunteering, and doing something for someone I care about. I remember along time ago, I worried that because I did not have a lot of money one time while in college, I could not get a "nice" present to match up an expensive "scarf" that was bought as a birthday present. One wise friend EvS told me not to get caught up on the monetary value of the present. She told me that I gave much more in my friendships and being there for my friends. I gave time, my attention and actually listened to my friends. EvS said those qualities alone were great and admirable. (To this day, I am very grateful to those words. In fact a few years ago I told this friend, she did not realize how powerful those words of encouragement have been on my mind all these years.)

Whoever said, it is hard to be honest to those you are closest to is so true. Or to find out that someone you trusted had back stabbed you. But as I have gotten older, I find that people who have to cut others down or "badmouth" others are people who derive pleasure and satisfaction to by saying mean things about others. It says that they have to feel better about themselves to "cut down" others. Also, those who really know you or willing to be fair and open minded will realize that you are not what others gossip say about you or your character. If someone is going to quickly judge me and believe everything they hear, then probably that person will not get along with me.

I find that there are a few personality traits/interests I have found myself drawn to others such as the love of volunteering, love of the arts, love of food/cuisine, love of travel or willingness to embrace differences and new experiences. One good friend who is not a wedding photographer and used to work in a lab told me he liked that not all my friends were Chinese. I have been lucky to have a broad circle of friends from a range of ages, ethnicities, and geographical locations. Whenever I travel, I am always to catch up with friends or get advice from friends about places I visit or travel to beforehand.

Whenever I think of my friends, I have a big silly smile on my face. I would not be the person I am without them. My friends have stood by me through thick and thin--thank you. Just being there and being you has enabled me to dig deeper with myself. Also I derive a lot of fun and excitement and personal satisfaction to do things for my friends. It probably explains a lot of why I love to cook and share food or take photographs. I have gone to a few weddings to see photos I have taken used in the photo montages. Many a friend have had the good humor and patience with my love of snapping away photos! Now that I have gone digital for only a year, I have been snapping even more photos than before.

A big thank you to all my friends!

Napoleon-Symbols of Power at the MFA

Symbols of Power, Napoleon and the Art of an Empire 1800-1815 that opened this past October 21, 2007 at the MFA Boston (Museum of Fine Arts) and it ends in January 27, 2008.

I enjoyed the exhibit Symbols of Power. I saw something similar but not entirely the same when I was in Hiroshima last year in Japan. It was a lot of Napoleon's personal items, furniture, jewelry, clothing etc so I originally thought it was the same exhibit. After walking through, I realized it was an entirely different exhibit. I learned that history and mythology do play a huge role as Napoleon utilized symbols such as the bee, swan, as well as other Roman gods/goddesses to show his power and place in history. The samples of fabrics, wall paper, clothing furniture, sculpture and paintings were great. I always find I learn a lot whenever I go to an exhibit.

"Symbols of Power: Napoleon and the Art of the Empire Style, 1800–1815” brings to Boston the grandeur of Napoleon’s empire and the splendor of his reign. The first comprehensive survey of the decorative arts of late eighteenth and early nineteenth century France, many of the nearly 200 works on display are masterpieces that have never before been seen outside of France.

This exhibition represents a rare opportunity to see many spectacular objects made for Napoleon and Josephine, which reflect the new French style that evolved from the austerity of the Revolution to the splendor of imperial France.

“Symbols of Power” examines the artistic use of classical emblems of power, including the use of Roman mythological figures, the laurel wreath, butterflies, swans, bees, and other symbols from antiquity and France’s distant past.

As an emperor, Napoleon allied himself with the great civilizations of the past, especially those of classical Rome and Greece and ancient Egypt, as a means of legitimizing his reign and creating an illusion of permanence, grandeur, and monumentality.

Objects made for Napoleon and his first wife, Josephine, crowned emperor and empress in 1804, are a focal point of the exhibition. Their legendary love affair is brought to life by Empress Josephine’s letter box, a wood, ebony, and gilded-bronze container that once held many of the letters Napoleon sent from the battlefield.

“Symbols of Power” also looks at how Napoleon’s military campaigns influenced decorative arts of the day. French victories inspired furnishings decorated with military trophies, arms, and armor. Many pieces incorporate images of Roman gods and goddesses of war, a nod both to France’s military prowess and the great civilization that served as the model for the new empire.

Butterfly is associated with the mythological figure Psyche, the God of Eros' human wife and the Goddess of Spring, Flora-symbolizes the beginning.

Thunderbolts represents Jupiter, the Roman God of Gods.

Laurel Wreath adorned the heads of victorious Ancient Roman warriors.

Lion symbolizes strength and royalty throughout history.

Swans has two meanings which is femininity and seduction while the other is Apollo. A swan had flown overhead the day Apollo, the Roman God of Love and the Sun was born.

(text: MFA website)

Bees were used in a lot of as a symbol of power. Three hundred gold bees were discovered in the tomb of Childeric I (on the year 481), which showed that the hive was the model of an absolute monarchy. Napoleon I used bees as a motif on all his carpets, as well as on his coronation robes. (lunedemiel.tm.fr)

Smith College Asian Affinity group-----first event last night

Thanks to AHP, we co-hosted our first Asian Affinity Group kick off event. It was a lovely place, great finger foods too---maki rolls, taquitos, mini quiches and crab cakes, great cheese from South End Fromaggio, crackers, veggie platter with dip, hummus and tapenade, along with some great soda spritzes and red Syrah wine! The turn out was not what we wished, but AHP and I both agreed we were a bit ambitious for our first event! We at least tried!

Still we advertised some upcoming events within the local chapter- our holiday party next week, the Afternoon Tea at the Taj in February, the Alumna Women of Color Conference in March and the Korean Arts Installation at the Smith College Art Museum next fall.

We are still in the organizing phase recruiting other like minded alums. So far we have a very active and great alum Ji in the LA area. It is a slow process but we are chugging along.

Boston Teams having a good year overall

(Celtics' website)

(Revolution website)

For the past four years, the New England Patriots have been doing not so bad. Since wining a few Super Bowls (2), with a killer team of Randy Moss and ace QB Tom Brady, they are having an awesome year. Naysayers were worried about Randy Moss but he has been acclimated just fine thank you very much. Go PATS! They recently smashed records too. The Patriots clinched the AFC East for the fifth consecutive season before their eleventh game (in Week 12), only the fourth time since the NFL introduced the 16-game schedule in 1978 that a team had clinched a division title by its eleventh game.[1] (wikipedia) .

The Boston Red Sox capped another World Series (I do not agree with this "name" as the whole world is not competing) within 3 years after having a very long "curse" which we can officially say is now reversed. Plus they are not referring to themselves as "idiots" as Johnny Damon did back in the 2004 season. Plus with some great thinking by the Boston Red Sox, Theo Epstein and their expensive Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka 松坂 大輔, ($51 million dollar man) and other Japanese pitcher Hideki Okajima 岡島 秀樹 have spurred on many new Japanese fans and tourism into Boston. (My sis had a chance to meet him due to her job. She said he was very polite and neat.)

Even the Boston Celtics are doing better than have for a long time now that Paul Pierce has Kevin Garnett to work with him. Sports critics have even said this paring could even rival the days when Larry Bird (back in the 1980's played).

The only team that does well but did not get to win was the New England Revolutions for the MLS CUP during their fourth attempt. Also they made it to the MLS CUP back to back years and despite great efforts they lost earlier this month. They made the finals but did not win recently. They made the finals the last few years to only come up short. I hope the are able to get that elusive title and win.

This year has been a good year overall.
* I did not mention the Boston Bruins. (I admit I have not been following them.)

Series 7----musings

Since I told my boss I was willing to take the Series 7 Test (aka General Securities Rep Exam), I have been questioning my sanity. I am sure if put all the time and effort needed, I would be fine. But my boss thought I could do it in under 2 months. (He did it with an aggressive study schedule of 3 weeks.) Then again, he had to for his job when he first started out. I bet you he had time to study for it (as in not a full time job) that I have right now. He lived and breathed the Series 7 Test. After the test I have the option to take the #63 (Blue Laws) or #66 right afterwards. (Highly recommended as you are already in study mode.)

I have been asked if I want to be a financial planner, truthfully I fell into working with my boss who is a CFP(TM) and Financial Advisor. But I knew after talking to a few good friends, getting a certification would not hurt. This is the big first test for the industry.

Can I say, after going to the halfway mark it is a bit painful especially the lovely three chapters on "BONDS." I have started to do some flash cards, if I want to make them for all the terms that is almost 1,000! I have been asking a lot of people their personal experiences. I have talked to two people today---one studied for 6 months and passed (but she took a class, has a kid, and was starting a new job) all at the same time. The other guy, took it for kicks and failed. But he studied for four months 2 hours every day after work and half a day every weekend on Saturdays/Sundays. After hearing those testimonials, it is making me reconsider my aggressive under 2 month regimen.

Plus my boss will not pay for the test UNLESS I pass. (He wants to put the pressure on to make sure I pass. Then again it costs $250 for the exam each time not including a good $250 in fees on top of it. So I can see why he wants me to pass on the first go.) I have a trip planned end of January. Now I am rethinking my strategy. I have heard some good advice and after taking the first PROGRESS exam I had the harsh reality. I have to get to know the "laws", "bonds", "formulas" well as they are my current weak points. I will know more once I finish all the chapters to go back over the concepts.

One key word that came up time and time again, "PRACTICE", "PRACTICE" on the practice exams and do not get caught up just memorizing the answers but actually know the concepts. It makes sense. After hearing that, I feel a bit better. This is the time of year it is hard to be TRULY anti-social. I have heard testimonials from others saying they really sequestered themselves from their social lives while preparing for the test.

I think that reality sunk in for me, when I talked the the licensing department today with the broker/dealer. I had to fill out the forms and sign my life away. I get a 120 day window once I pass in the (Uniform Forms 4) U4. Phew! I had to detail the last 10 years of my life residential and employment histories. Luckily for me, I actually remembered it all and did NOT have to supply any addresses (this helped a lot!).

I must say the last thing I want to do is study after a full day's work. I have tried studying at work but there is too many distractions while my boss is around. I find the library helpful I just dislike schlepping the BIG STC binders with me.

But I guess this would be a great certification once I get it. It will open doors and opportunities and responsibilities for me working with my boss.

Two Time NASCAR Winner Helio Castroneves wins Season 5 of Dancing with the Stars

(pics from ABC.com)

Last night, on the Finale results show for season five of Dancing with the Stars, the two time NASCAR driver winner Helio Castroneves (aka Spiderman) and his partner Julianne Hough edged out Mel B (of the Spice Girls who were out in full force supporting their gal front row and center) and Maksim Chmerkovskiy for the title. Marie Osmond was announced in third place earlier in the two hour results show on ABC.

*Julianne Hough now joins Cheryl Burke for winning back to back contests! Last year was her first competition and she won with Olympic Gold Medalist Apolo Anton Ohno last season.

The judges have constantly said this season has been the best one yet. The dancing, the competitors and the level of dancing has been superior throughout. The show brought back all the previous participants to dance once more with an exception of boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr who has a bout slated next week. Celine Dion took to the stage twice during the two hour results show last night.

The judges (Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonoili) gave both Mel B and Helio for their final performances of the competition perfect scores of 10! (A crowning achievement to cap off a wonderful season!). In the interview segment, Helio admitted he was hoping to not get eliminated early and then his competitive spirit caught up and he did not want to lose but the desire to win it all consumed him. Mel B also said once she puts her heart into something, she expects to come out on top. It was a treat to watch both couples last night.

A great show and both would have been great winners. Personally I think Helio had a slight edge over Mel B.

Tday 2007 wrap up...

Wednesday-11.21.07

Today I found out at work that I get Friday off! I am psyched! Last year I had to work. But then again I am studying for the series 7 compared to last year I was heading to Asia for long holiday.

Work is filled with setting up for the next few weeks, catching up on ACT, and organizing.

I am lucky to go to Shiki to introduce this place to her roomie Deb and BetsN. I love that Hien loves this place! Even her difficult to please fiancee loves Shiki too after she surprised him for his birthday! I love their kaiseki lunch!

We had a wonderful meal filled with great food! The soba salad, seaweed salad, spicy tuna and california maki and other dishes were incredible! The company and food were a nice ending of a short work week.

Then I headed home to spend time for a later dinner with the folks and my sis. We went to our usual chinese restaurant for dinner. I did not have too much as I had a great meal at Shiki. We got a full meal but the oyster dish was so delicious I had to have a few bites of it.

We went to Super88 (local Asian Market) and I got to see "buddha hands" for the first time. My dad he had not seen this fruit since he was a boy in China. I loved that there was some "dragon fruit" or "Asian Pears" from Korea. I love the variety of foods I can get at Super88.

Thursday 11.22.07

I get a ride to Allston/Brighton BK for the 9am pickup to Mohegan Sun. But my folks were not happy and thought I should pick up the bus in Chinatown. I was able to pick up the 9:30am. But I must admit it was very disorganized. There was no person around to ask questions and I had a few people asking me about the bus situation. There were four buses to take. But there was a rhyme and reason but for someone such as myself --- a first time taking this bus to Mohegan Sun. I finally figured out everything after finding a person in charge.

Once I figured out my bus, I was all set. The bus set off on time and we did hit some traffic. I was able to see some TVB dramas. I haven't watched one in a long time since watching the Myolie Wu and Andy Hui version of "Bridget Jones". I caught the ending episode of "Fathers and Sons" and the first 2 episodes of "Steps".

I tend to like dancing shows/programs since growing up. Though the story was not that excited, I did enjoy the ballroom dancing scenes in this drama. It was good practice reading simplified characters with Cantonese.

I got to the casino at 11:30am and I got to wander around trying to figure out my lunch plans. I decided on getting the buffet. (I figured out it would be good to get options and choices.) I tried some great food - Italian Wedding Soup, cranberry risotto, spaghetti squash, Asian cucumber salad, gnocchi, Pumpkin Ginger soup, Pumpkin Pie etc. I was surprised how overall the food selection was good.

With the time, I decided to get into the concert a bit earlier. I am so glad that I decided to because I got a good seat as a result. Granted I had to go through strict security, check in my bag, but it was good to just relax and wait for the concert. The whole concert lasted for two and a half hours! I had a lot of fun!

The ride back, it was a bit confusing. Though we were at gate 18, there were a good 3 buses that came and went before our bus. Luckily I remembered our tour leader and I checked to read what was written on the front of the bus. But we were not that late about 15 minutes as there were many buses leaving at the same time.

The return bus ride was uneventful. I enjoyed watching 2 more episodes of "Steps". The gentleman next to me was snoring. I did notice whenever you take Chinese tour trips a tip is expected. It was ok to give the $2. I liked that there were a few stops to drop off people -Copley, South Cove, Kneeland and Allston.

I got home by almost 8pm. Hung out with my sis, studied a bit. Cemented plans to meet with JMM to meet for drinks after his Thanksgiving dinner with his family.

We met up and had a nice conversation. I thought the bar drinks were affordable at Fugakyu. I had not seen him since he left 2005. He has a better memory than me. The last time we hung out was dinner at Petit Robert Bistro (one of my fave restaurants in the area). I just remembered El Peleon. We talked about her lives and realize as you get older there are certain needs and expectations compared to before.

One of them is stability. It is great to want to do your dream job that feeds your soul. But not everyone is lucky to have the job that is able to pay your bills and feed your soul. Also we agreed that at the stage of life we are at, we are also aware that our pals are beyond us in their own lives.

Funny how married friends with kids mean well and want everyone to join them in their bliss. But there is something to be said to be single and be more self aware and understand yourself.

Friday 11.23.07

Today, I did a little studying. Then my sis and I went to a leisurely lunch at L'Espalier in the Back Bay (moving locations in 7 months). I had always wanted to eat here and I finally got to eat here. We had an amazing meal and spent 2 hours linger over our 5 course lunch degustation.

My sis and I were not interested in participating in the Black Friday shopping. I had heard that people were lining up at midnight at the Wrentham outlets already and all the stores were open at 7am.

After our great meal, I got some more study supplies to make more flash cards. I went to the Boston Public Library to study until my meeting time with BetsN. I chose the periodical room. It reminded me of the one back in college I used to frequent on the third floor at Nielson Library on campus.

It is much colder than it has been in a long time.

I made it to Carlisle thanks to BetsN. Her current digs was cool. I got to help out prep and met a lot of people and her friends. It was a great "potluck" party. Met some cool people, hung out, cooked and bonded with many people. Plus I got to crash in the lovely guest room which is much nicer than my current set up which I joked to my hostess.

Saturday 11.24.07

Caught up on some reading, had a great breakfast and tried some cool Republic Honeydew green tea. We waited for everyone to get together to go to Wrentham together. En route to the car up the driveway, I did a tumble over a branch. Unfortunately it has to be on the bum left ankle I had sprained less than a month earlier. Just my luck and it was not fun. I still decided to go with them to Wrentham. BetsN told me that I should get a wheelchair. I was against it. But after limping and being in pain, I realized it was a good idea to get one. It was free to borrow as long as you fill out a form and give a form of identification.

I ended up being the "bag lady" holding every one's purchases. One good thing to think positively, I did not spend a lot. Being stuck on the chair, you notice people are generally really nice and helpful. But a lot of spaces and stores are not wheel chair accessible. I found myself sitting outside in the cold a few times as I did not want to deal with being stuck in a corner. At times I thought I should have had my flashcards with me.

We took a brief break and got something at Village Cafe---loaded potato soup and phily cheese steak calzone. Once fed, we all decided to do more window shopping. We were done by3pm. As we drove out, there were horrendous long lines trying to enter Wrentham all the way from the highway. We were lucky that the lines into Wrentham were nonexistent at 11am when we arrived.

We got back to Boston by 4pm. It was great that I had some leftovers to eat and I set off for a lot of flashcards to make.

Sunday, November 25

Spent the day catching up and making flash cards as the ankle is still not good. I get to catch up on my fave shows thanks to "ON DEMAND" and some of them were expiring soon so just in time!

Dancing with the Stars-----semis last night

The fifth season of Dancing with the Stars on ABC has been a smash hit and this year's contestants are fierce! Last night was the nail biting semi's where the final tallies of scores to see who were the final three to make it and who was cut. (Usually it is only two couples in the finals but not this year!)

With impeccable dancing from all contestants Mel B (Scary Spice), Helio Castroneves (NASCAR driver), Marie Osmond and Jennie Garth (Beverly Hills 90210) one had to go. All brought their "A" game! Alas, Jennie Garth got cut. She has come a long way from being not so confident on her dancing ability to getting perfect 10's on Monday night. In fact, 10's were freely thrown around on Monday night's show. But they were given for good reason because the level of competition, showmanship, skill was outstanding!

I have been watching this show on and off for a few seasons. But it has been great to watch when I can. Now I realized I can watch the whole season on http://www.abc.com/ online if I want to. Hmmm tempting but I should be studying!

This season's competition has definitely had some interesting moments from surprise eliminations such as top contender Sabrina Bryan got ousted a few weeks ago. Many thought she would make the finale, but she did not get the fans support or love. Or the surprise fainting spell Marie Osmond had during a live performance during one episode. (Fortunately she was ok but still it brought a scare to everyone and made for good tv for many of the entertainment channels saying over 30 million viewers saw it happen live!).

Plus I am psyched to see the women doing very well this year! The only man standing is Helio Castroneves. Usually no female celebrity contender has made it. This year it is not one but two women Mel B and Marie Osmond.

Happy Thanksgiving to All!

(wikipedia)
"The First Thanksgiving", painted by Jean Leon Gerome Ferris (18631930).

I wanted to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!

Per the weather channel, today's weather is not so great in many regions in the USA. Today is among the HEAVIEST travel dates in year for the USA. I am glad I am not traveling anywhere. Other than heading to Mohegan Sun tomorrow via bus, I am staying put in Beantown.

Tomorrow (TDAY) is also my bro's bday this year too! Every few years his bday coincides with Thanksgiving. As usual, he cannot celebrate it with us as he is abroad in Asia outside of Seoul. But alas, Thanksgiving to our family is not a big deal. Other holidays are more important and in particular Chinese New Year.

Tonight, I am eating with the folks who are coming in dinner. So I will see them after work and catching up with Hien/BetsN and her roomie. We are going to hang out at Shiki. I will help them along with the menu as Hien wants to explore more and Bets is an awesome foodie friend!

I found out yesterday that my boss is letting me have the day off. I think a big factor is that I am studying for the "series 7" might have something to do with it. Though the market is open for abbreviated hours (9:30-1pm) I am psyched to have the unexpected day off! I only have taken days off if I really need to---family obligations/injuries. I don't get many holidays so this is a treat. Last year, I did not have the day off. Then again, I was heading to Asia for along time might have something to do with it.

Tomorrow I am heading to see Ah-Mei 阿妹 /張惠妹 in concert! I am excited! I love her voice and singing. Granted I am behind in her hits and songs but I think it will be a good experience. I have to get up early to grab the shuttle. I will study, grab lunch, study, attend the concert, study, hitch the 5:15pm shuttle back to Boston. It will be my second Chinese concert. My first one was a few years back with Jacky Cheung 張學友 (Hok Yau) (one of the sky kings).

Tentative plans to hang with a friend I have not seen in a long long time since he went to Asia-Singapore/Shanghai now lives in the Bay Area for Pay Pal. JMM is a cool guy and used to model too. I cannot say I know many models. (I do know of NKO who now is in the Seattle area too.) Both NKO and JMM are cool people.

Friday, I have some study targets that I hope I hit. It is going to be a nice long weekend. I realize I have to make up a bunch of ushering gigs due to my bum ankle a few weeks back. (Most inopportune time with 5 sessions that one weekend too!).
